This 8-hour training (6 hrs. in-person; 2 hrs. independent work) teaches adults who work with youth how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses, and substance use disorders. It gives them the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents (ages 12-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. Adults that complete the 8 hours will become certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.

What it covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness including anxiety, depression, eating disorder, and ADHD
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance abuse.
  • How to interact with adolescents in crisis and connect them with help.

Who should take it? Teachers, school staff, or anyone that works with youth gr. 6-12.
